Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who turned 53 on Wednesday, received birthday greetings from top political leaders across India. Political allies, rivals and grassroots workers wished him good health and a long life, with many messages carrying both congratulatory and significant political undertones.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment of both parties to social justice. He expressed confidence that the Congress and the Samajwadi Party would together fulfil the resolve for social justice through the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) alliance. “With the participation of the PDA, we will together fulfil the resolve for social justice. Best wishes for good health and a happy life,” Gandhi’s post read.

The reaffirmation of unity comes ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, expected in early 2027. Akhilesh Yadav has framed the 2027 elections as a decisive battle to save democracy, even claiming they could be India’s last free elections. The public display of warmth and strategic messaging from top Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, observers say, will reassure grassroots workers that the SP-Congress alliance in Uttar Pradesh remains intact.

Importantly, the birthday wishes from both Rahul Gandhi and the Congress president underscored a shared resolve to fight the 2027 Assembly elections together, with the focus on victory rather than seat-sharing disputes. Kharge, while wishing Akhilesh good health and a bright future, said, “Together, we will continue to advance towards social justice, inclusive development, and the strengthening of democracy and the Constitution.”

The Congress and the Samajwadi Party contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together in Uttar Pradesh as part of the INDIA bloc, which delivered a strong performance by winning 43 seats and significantly denting the BJP-led NDA’s tally. In the upcoming Assembly elections, the Congress is expected to once again contest in alliance with the Samajwadi Party and seek to replicate the success the two parties achieved in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also congratulated Akhilesh, extending her wishes to him and his family. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, too, conveyed his greetings and prayed to Lord Shri Ram for Akhilesh Yadav’s good health and longevity. “Heartfelt birthday greetings to the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Akhilesh Yadav Ji. I pray to Lord Shri Ram for your good health and long life,” he wrote on X.

Some political observers also read political significance into Adityanath’s reference to Lord Ram in his message. Akhilesh has been targeting the ruling BJP over the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram Mandir. By raising questions about transparency, accountability and the handling of devotees’ donations, he is challenging the BJP on an issue closely linked to its political identity. The BJP has denied the allegations and accused the opposition of politicising the matter, making it a significant electoral issue.

Political observers say the year ahead will test the Samajwadi Party’s political strength and shape the contours of alliances for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Supporters used his birthday to project him as the principal alternative to the current regime, with posters and banners in parts of Uttar Pradesh describing Akhilesh as the “future Prime Minister” and the “Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in 2027.”

Under Akhilesh’s leadership, the SP has been working to expand beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav (MY) vote bank by building a broader PDA coalition, targeting backward classes, Dalits and minorities, and positioning itself as a champion of social justice across multiple communities.
